We have been beleaguered by corruption throughout its length for decades. The consequences, unparalleled in repercussions and ramifications has brought our country into a downward spiral which reverberated to all aspects of Philippine political, economic and social life. Various attempts to combobulate the situation all prove futile and in vain. Everything that proliferated like drugs, criminality, insurgency, terrorism, government dysfunction, and all, have their root causes from corruption.
The problem of corruption has now become systemic that the key issues include the influence of wealthy individuals over the government; “pay to play” politics and the revolving doors between elected government officials, for-profit companies, and professional associations; and the abuse of the government financial system by corrupt kleptocrats and local elites. The situation is pandemic in the extreme.
SIRS and MADAMES: you live in utmost luxuries and satiation while the stomachs of the people whom you swore to serve and protect are empty and are wrapped up with all kinds of sufferings and insecurities. They are in tears because of you whose hearts are burned as with a heated iron. You will fall down, whether you like it or not. What kind of legacy would you leave to the Filipino people, your constituents and your family?
By being viscerally and personally vitriolic, people will entertain the thought the lure of the wonders sure to be found on the other side of corruption is too strong. Admittedly, they cannot resist—an Adam and Eve apple-to-apple comparison. True enough, corruption contained a powerful sense of opportunity and reward as well as downside and danger.
Nevertheless, riches and wealth through corruption are just short-gap filler, a zero-sum, you may gain the world but lose your soul; we borrow from one person’s sorrow to be happy; we pay it back with golden interest later. The payback may not come quickly or as fast as it seems, but surely, it will come soonest, then, you will realize, regrets always come in the end.
